Rhoades, Argall Announce $350,000 in Funding for Hamburg Pool and Tamaqua PlaygroundHARRISBURG (April 22) – Senator James J. Rhoades ( R-29) and Rep. David G. Argall (R-Berks/Schuylkill) today announced a total of $350,000 in grants from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) for improvements to the Hamburg Community Swimming Pool and Tamaqua Borough's Bungalow Playground. "I'm pleased that these municipalities have received these grants," said Rhoades. "This program is very successful at creating and maintaining outdoor recreation in the Commonwealth, and I'm sure the funding will be put to good use." "When we invest in recreation and conservation opportunities in our community's, we help improve the overall experience for residents to live, work and play in our neighborhoods," said Argall. Hamburg Borough will receive $300,000 to rehabilitate and further develop the Hamburg Community Swimming Pool. Tammy Wilkinson, Vice President of Hamburg Borough Council, explained that the pool originally opened on July 4, 1930 and was expanded in 1974. "This funding will help make the pool accessible, upgrade the filtration system and complete other repairs," she explained. "Each year, residents from more than 14 municipalities use the pool. This grant is a tremendous blessing that will allow us to keep the pool open for the people of the Hamburg area." Argall added, "This is one of the largest recreation investments in recent memory. Hamburg's pool serves the entire region and is heavily used throughout the summer months. This funding will help make much-needed improvements." Tamaqua Borough will receive $50,000 in funding for renovations and improvements to the Bungalow Playground located next to the Howard Buehler Memorial Pool. The grant will help upgrade and replace playground equipment located near the picnic pavilion at the Bungalow Park. The project application was developed and submitted by the Eastern Schuylkill Recreation Commission (ESRC), a group of local municipalities. Jason Boris, ESRC Director, explained the importance of the project and of the inter-municipal effort. "The ESRC has representatives from each municipality. The Bungalow Playground was the top recreation priority presented by the Borough representatives on the ESRC. This is really a regional community pool and playground." Argall added, "There has been a great deal of investment in the Bungalow Park in recent years. These playground upgrades and new equipment will add to the new wading pool, new slides and new concession stand to make this one of the region's top recreation spots." These grants are part of DCNR's Community Conservation Partnerships Program that aims to provide assistance to local governments, river and trail organizations, land trusts and other non-profits for parks, recreation, conservation and greenways projects
