Rhoades and Argall Announces More Than $1.5 Million in Home Town Streets Funding for Tamaqua and Hamburg

HARRISBURG (Feb. 2) – Sen. James J. Rhoades (R-Schuylkill) and Rep. David G. Argall (R-Berks/Schuylkill) today announced the awarding of a total of $1.53 Million in Home Town Streets and Safe Routes to Schools funding for several communities across Schuylkill and Berks Counties to improve their neighborhoods and walking routes.

"This program is helping to improve and enhance our communities and the local economy. By giving them this opportunity, we will encourage families to move back into these neighborhoods, and create a built-in customer base for downtown merchants," said Rhoades. "I am pleased that Schuylkill and Berks counties will benefit from this funding."

"This funding will continue many of the successful efforts underway to rebuild our communities by helping restore sidewalks, replace streetlights and renovate walkways for residents," Argall said.  "I commend our local communities for their commitment to making these projects a reality."

Rhoades and Argall announced today that Tamaqua Borough, in Schuylkill County, will receive $219,650 for improved pedestrian crosswalks in the downtown.  These improvements will make the downtown safer for pedestrians by improving the crosswalks at busy intersections.

"Tamaqua's downtown has improved dramatically in recent years," added Linda Yulanavage, Tamaqua's Downtown Manager, "These new crosswalks will make it safer for residents, shoppers and visitors in the downtown."

The Our Town Foundation in Hamburg, Berks County, will receive $652,165 for streetscape improvements on State Street and an additional $659,755 for streetscape improvements on Fourth Street.  These projects will include vintage street lighting and sidewalk improvements.

"This project will visually improve these streets and make Hamburg more marketable to new businesses," said Our Town Foundation Program Manger, Deena Kershner, "This streetscape project is an important part of Hamburg's plan to improve the downtown;  we will also continue to focus on promoting the community and strengthening businesses."

Argall concluded by commending Hamburg and Tamaqua for submitting competitive applications.  "It is encouraging to see our historic downtowns coming back.  Without the efforts of many volunteers and the support of the local borough's these projects would not be possible."
